La Vuelta – Points Classification

Slightly different from the Tour de France,so pay attention!

The only thing that remains the same is the colour of the jersey, green.

Intermediate sprints aren’t really valued as you only pick up 4 points for winning,2 points for 2nd and 1 point for 3rd.

The points awarded at the end of the stage are as follows:-

1st – 25

2nd – 20

3rd – 16

4th – 14

5th – 12

6th – 10

7th – 9

8th – 8

9th – 7

10th – 6

11th – 5

12th – 4

13th – 3

14th – 2

It doesn’t matter what type of stage it is the points always remain the same. The Tour changed it so that flat stages get more points than mountain stages but the Vuelta has remained the same. This means that the nature of the course will determine if a sprinter or mountain goat will win the jersey.

Last year,John Degenkolb dominated the sprints and won an amazing 5 stages.Despite this he only finished 4th with 149 points.

1st – Valverde 199

2nd – Rodriguez 193

3rd – Contador 161

4th – Degenkolb 149

5th – Bennati 107

This was due to the number of mountain stages compared to sprint stages.

This year we have 11 mountain finishes compared with 8 sprint finishes,so the jersey should go to a climber rather than a sprinter. The top 3 of the points classification in 2012 featured the same riders as the GC,but in a different order.

Sprinters have won the jersey before but the route wasn’t as mountainous.

2002 – Erik Zabel 188

2003 – Erik Zabel 181

2004 – Erik Zabel 152

2005 – Alessandro Petacchi 169

2006 – Thor Hushovd 199

2007 – Daniele Bennati 147

2008 – Greg Van Avermaet 158

2009 – Andre Greipel 150

2010 – Mark Cavendish 156

2011 – Bauke Mollema 122

2012 – Alejandro Valverde 199

In 2012 the points jersey went right down to the final stage,a 6th place on the stage was enough for Alejandro Valverde to overhaul Joaquim Rodriguez and win the green jersey. It was an extra bit of consistency that won it for Valverde.

1st places – Rodriguez 3 v 2 Valverde

2nd places – Rodriguez 3 v 2 Valverde

3rd places – Rodriguez 1 v 2 Valverde

4th places – Rodriguez 1 v 1 Valverde

5th places – Rodriguez 0 v 1 Valverde

6th places – Rodriguez 0 v 2 Valverde

Top 10s – Rodriguez 11 v 12 Valverde.

Overall points – Rodriguez 193 v 199 Valverde

The winner of the points jersey will be a very consistent climber, who can deal with short, sharp climbs and longer ones.
