La Vuelta – Stage 1 Preview

We open the Vuelta with a 27.4km team time-trial.

Screen Shot 2013-08-14 at 21.30.42It’s a flat course, but long enough to create some significant time gaps.

Screen Shot 2013-08-14 at 21.33.56There isn’t too many corners,so not the most technical of courses. We are very near the coast,so it would suit a big, strong outfit that can battle against the wind.

Screen Shot 2013-08-14 at 21.40.15There is a technical section as the riders approach the 1km flag but the main issue could be wind.Winds of 15mph are predicted and coming from almost NNE.This means it’ll be a tail/crosswind for most of the route, expect for the final 2km,where it’s a crosswind and a very tough end to the course.

Screen Shot 2013-08-14 at 21.41.50There is a nice downhill section from 3km to 2km and the riders will build up some serious speed, just a pity the crosswind will kill their speed from 2km.

The Giro had a similar finish, along the sea front, and Tony Martin did an enormous turn for OPQS which almost won them the day.

Orica won that day but don’t have as strong a team at the Vuelta.

TTT experts,Garmin, don’t have a strong team here either.

Recommended bet is RadioShack to win at 13/2.They have a big, strong team with quite a few good time trial riders:Cancellara,Busche,Horner,Popovych and Zubeldia.

OPQS are the justified favourite but hopefully we’ll get a little surprise.

2 points on RadioShack at 13/2

2 points on OPQS at 6/4
