Siena > Siena 215km
Does size really matter? There was nothing wrong with the old route, it always delivered fascinating racing and allowed a variety of rider types to challenge for the win. However, the organisers have decided to add 31km, 577m of elevation and 4 more white road sectors. Is it really because they want the race to be a monument? Well, if it is, it’s bloody stupid. There is no “monument panel”, no one actually decides if we’ll get a sixth monument. The change in route changes the type of rider who can win, over 4000m of climbing is like a mountain stage in the Tour de France, it swings the advantage over to the climbers and makes it very hard for puncheurs to compete. I’m not a fan of the change in route, but I don’t cope well with change.
